The Collab Lab

Called gifted in music at the early age of 2, Collab started life knowing nothing else other than playing the organ and keyboard. Born in Prince Frederick, MD, Collab grew up in Solomon’s and was exposed to music by her mother and father very early in life. By her father being a Methodist Minister at the time, and mother being a homemaker, gospel music was a fixture in the household. That wasn’t the only music she was exposed to, if her parents only knew that she also was exposed to secular music as well from her older brother and cousins. Collab often played in church at a early age, along with singing on the choir. This gave Collab a good foundation for music.

Collab’s parents thought it would be a great idea to give their little girl the opportunity to have formal lessons in playing the organ and piano when she 7 years old. But what they didn’t know was that their little girl was playing everything the instructor gave her, but with a twist. The instructor thought she was actually reading the music, but just like the movie Drumline, she was playing by ear. Her attention to detail was astonishing, the only thing she wanted to do was make music, and if she could hear it, she could play it. Needless to say, no more lessons were given.

From elementary to high school, Collab has always had a vision of producing music; she just didn’t know how. So after high school, she went to college to be an electro-mechanical drafter. But as time moved on, the desire to create was getting stronger as well.

In 1990 Collab married, and in 1995, Collab moved to the Mid-Atlantic region from Florida, where she got a taste for becoming a DJ. She was introduced to the owner of Go-Go Cash Productions, Michael Cash in Washington, DC, who was also the owner of an independent record label called MAC Records. This gave Collab the experience and knowledge on the inner workings of the music business from both ends. This intrigue Collab to start a consulting company; providing information to artists concerning how to stay in the music business.

After consulting numerous artists, Collab decided that it was time for her to stop running from the music inside of her, and in 2008, transposed in The Collab Lab. Collab is currently working on a debut album which should be out in the spring of 2010.
